Island Lark got the gun!

[audio:http://www.blogcanoe.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/explosion1.mp3]

It was a full last weekend, with two races both days. The second race on Saturday was a drifter and it came down to only minutes before the 2 & 1/2 hour time limit expired, but Mystery manage to finish just in time extending the time another 45 minutes. Silver heel finished awhile behind mystery and Island blossom took third just in time before the 45 minutes expired. Everyone else was left to drift home...

After tropical storm Hanna, which brought some rain and a few large gusts of wind (otherwise no much of a show!) the wind calmed down enough for two races. The plan of having two back-to-back races plus a third in the afternoon was re-evaluated and changed so there were only two races on Sunday. There were a few canoes missing from the weekend, Spirit of Wyetowne, Oliver's Gift, Persistence, Silver Heel, Billie P. Hall, Magic, and Noddy. The Mary Julia Hall again showed up but was not able to race for the first race. A beautiful day for racing with a close finish between Island Blossom and Jay Dee, with Island Lark right behind both. The rest of the fleet was several minutes behind the first 3 boats.

Mary Julia Hall came out for the second race, making a total of 8 canoes competing. The wind seemed to be dying off towards the late afternoon but held out long enough to finish the races. It was great to see Mary Julia Hall sailing with the fleet, she only sailed her jib and her fore but finished the course.

The last race of the day and the season was bitter-sweet… Only 6 canoes competing with lots of wind making for a rough day, very squriley and shifty! Everyone tired from the first race, possibly hung over, looking forward to finishing the season and relaxing…

Mystery and Jay Dee were fighting for a lead on the fleet, meanwhile Island Lark came up behind and closed the gap finishing ahead of Jay Dee. The Island Bird capsized in the previous race and was unable to compete for this one.

There seemed to be some wind in the morning, enough to race plus a little more. There seemed to be a few canoes that were late out to the rally point and therefore the RC postponed the start. The fleet has certainly diminished, missing from this weekend were Persistence, Noddy, Mystery, Oliver's Gift, Silver Heel and The Spirit of Wyetown unfortunately. There was talk that Mystery would be back this weekend but that did not seem to happen, hopefully they will be back for the Labor Day series on the miles!

The course was set windward to leeward around 3 times, giving plenty of opportunity for anyone to come back from behind, also making for a fairly quick race only about an hour. The start was a tight one Jay Dee almost pushed up into the committee boat, and Patricia and Edmee S. got squeezed out and had to circle around making it to the line late.

Jay Dee got the gun!

The second race wasn't looking too promising, as the wind seemed to drop out and barely enough to start at race, but some dark clouds moving in seemed to bring some wind with them towards the start line. The Line was set close to the shore up past the TAYC which always makes for an interesting start. Everyone reaching back and forth across the line, Jay Dee decided to do a port tack start but unfortunately Billie P. Hall was on starboard headed down the line as the Jay Dee tried to sail ahead to avoid coming down and circling around, but was unable to make it and Billie P. Hall's bowsprit speared Jay Dee's outrigger sending Jay Dee's mainsheet tender in the water. Billie P. Hall's bowsprit snapped in half and was unable to continue, while only some slight damage was done to the outrigger on Jay Dee she dropped out due to the collision. From what I was able to see the race upwind was looking great but as the fleet came up the river approaching Peck's Point it seemed as many painted boats upon a painted river. Rounding the mark seemed to be everyone together but coming back upwind some went towards the left shore and some went towards the right shore picking up steam and heading towards the finish, although Island Lark seemed to stay towards the middle of the river chasing wind shifts and fell behind the fleet. The Edmee S. just lifted above the fleet and finished well ahead earning the first gun they've had since 1998! Congrats!!!

Edmee S. got the gun!

There seemed to be some wind for the day but dropped out and became a floater kind of day. Reaching the first mark seemed to take quite some time and the thought of coming all the way back to that mark was not a kind oneÂ… Jay Dee was able to move ahead of the fleet and round the first mark with the fleet some distance behind. Then it became a search for wind as everyone headed towards the Bellevue shore on the downwind, with everyone parked on the leeward rail trying to resist the urge to break out some pie pans and start paddling. It became apparent that the race would not end in the time allotted even with a 3 hour time limit so the course was shortened to once around and back up to the finish. Jay Dee was able to hold her lead as Island Blossom and Patricia came up, and finished 8 minutes ahead of the rest of the fleet giving her not a only a gun but a first as well! Island Blossom finished second with Patricia and Island Bird fighting for 3rd.

Jay Dee got the gun!

TAYC Annual Regatta Series Results!!

Results for the Annual Regatta series for the Log canoes. A summary of the weekend..(I will repost more detailed results when/if I receive any)

It was quite a surprising weekend, the wind was predicted to be light and eventually blow out on Saturday but luckily it held and turned out to be a great day. Also on Sunday the wind was not predicted as very much, but it held and we had another great racing day!

We had a few additions this weekend, Noddy made her debut appearance for the season as well as Mary Julia Hall (formerly S.C. Dobson.) But we lost Persistence this weekend. I don't recall Mary Julia Hall starting any of the races, I believe she capsized before she could start the first race and did not come back for the last two.

1st Race (Saturday, August 9th)

We had 12 of the 14 registered Canoes plus 1 more, Mary Julia Hall competed. The wind was predicted to be light in the morning and almost gone by the afternoon, but the Chesapeake Bay is hardly ever predictable. The wind stayed and was fairly strong, (no kites!) Which was great for all the classes sailing, 420, Laser, Laser Radial, Optimist, Penguin, and Snipe. The Race was postponed so the rest of the Canoe fleet could assemble for the start.

The Mary Julia Hall towed out to start the first race but capsized before the start, a few people saw the floating purple crew, they did not make it for the second or third race either. Noddy came, saw, and capsized! Both the first and second race she went over, and lets just forget about the third.... Some Mystery folks were crewing Noddy, which would make a mystery as to why she capsized?!

The Jay Dee hammered through and took the first gun, but corrected to 6th.. Island Lark finishing behind Jay Dee corrected to first, along with Island Blossom behind them at 2nd. Edmee S. had a huge first race, staying well ahead of everyone on the long downwind leg, and came in 3rd! It was almost an obstacle course with the optis, lazers, 420s, and snipes racing all on the Tred Avon. I'm sure the smaller classes didn't mind the massive Log Canoes driving through there courses and pushing them every which way. Blanketing their wind and possibly throwing a beer can or two towards their boat.

2nd Race (Saturday, August 9th)

Again 12 of the 14 competed, plus I believe Mary Julia Hall tried once again. During lunch everyone watched and expected the wind to drop out but held nicely and seemed to get stronger. The course was set almost the same as the morning race, with 2 more marks added.

The starting line was set very close to shore, up the from the TAYC. The depth of the water was a good concern but there seemed to be plenty and I didn't see anyone having any issues with that. The starting line was tight and 2 Canoe were over early Jay Dee and Edmee S., although there seemed to be more canoes over since it was a very close start with Noddy Capsizing right at the start. Jay Dee was able to make a huge comeback on the downwind driving past the rest of the fleet and right into Island Lark. Island Lark was headed for a gun when all of a sudden Island Blossom finds a shift and gets lifted all the way to the finish like a rocket. Island Bird finished slightly ahead of the middle of the fleet, I believe 5-6 across the line, correcting to 3rd.

3rd Race (Sunday, August 10th)

12 of the 14 registered canoes competed this race, minus Mary Julia Hall. The wind held out for another racing day and made for a good race. The course was set with long upwind and downwind leg nearly twice around.

A great start for many, all headed up to Benoni Point then back down to Peck's Point. Island Lark seemed to just take off and never slow down the entire race, just pushing her way further and further ahead of the fleet. (A great victory considering she has capsized on the tow over Friday evening to Oxford). Jay Dee being the closest behind her, watching her plow through the Laser fleet down towards the finish. Nobody even heard the gun and questioned whether she even raced that afternoon or not?! Possibly an apparition of her instead! The rest of the fleet wasn't too far from each other. Jay Dee finishing well ahead of everyone aside from Island Blossom, corrected to 7th. Patricia came up and took 3rd place, her best race of the weekend. Along with Billie P. Hall correcting behind her with 5th. Spirit of Wyetown, Noddy and Silver Heel had a rough weekend finishing at the rear of the fleet overall. Mystery still out of commission...

The award ceremony was held at Harleigh with Jacket and tie required, the awards for entire regatta were given out and at the end the Log Canoe trophies were given out.

[pictobrowser 23882489@N04 72157606678820457]

There was also the annual croquet match between Silver Heel and Edmee S., Edmee S. took the victory this year after a 4 year losing streak to Heel.

There was plenty of wind to start off the day! In fact maybe a little too much for some canoes The Spirit of Wyetowne, Island Bird, Billie P. Hall and even the mighty Jay Dee all capsized before the race. The Jay Dee was entirely crewed by female Log Canoers' assembled from across the fleet, unfortunately the mainsail controls broke and while trying to fix that she "auto-tacked" too quickly as the boards were set but empty. Magic towed out and was all set to rig but did not start the first race and went back in.

The second race proved just as difficult as the first, with the wind building and causing even more carnage! Silver Heel and Island Bird both capsized before the start and Edmee S., Billie P. Hall, and Magic capsized during the race from what I remember after the downwind leg out past Ashcroft off Martingham, heading back upwind towards the finish, where the wind was very fluky. The finish line was set in some obstacle course/gauntlet of anchored boats and spectators!

All the canoes stayed upright for this race and all finished within the time limit. The wind seemed to be building for the day but instead dropped out some which made for a less "exciting" day as Saturday! The start of the race was quite a mess, boats almost on top of each other and Island Blossom stalling at the line. It was quite the spectacle from the chase boat with plenty of yelling, what an exciting start!

Magic was unable to compete due to lack of crew, which can ruin a weekend for any canoe. The day went pretty smoothly aside from a large power boat as described by a fellow primary(scrappledog:)

"I would say another G-Cup weekend lowlight was that fat, yellow Bertram Amaretto from Baltimore that purposely kicked an Ocean City-sized surf on the entire fleet Sunday, all the while flipping us the bird. If that's not the worst Rodney you've ever seen, I'd like to know what was. Lark took the worst of it, shipping on a ton of water and suffering a significant mast crack from the impact. The guy knew exactly what he was doing, too -- he intentionally ignored all the chase boats that approached trying to get him to slow down, and nearly ran over one.

He probably got home and beat up a litter of kittens."

A certain lack of respect for all sailing vessels towards power boats is always rewarded in some way...

The finish was exciting for the 1st and 2nd place, Island Blossom managed to snatch defeat out of almost certain victory, falling behind Island Lark and finishing minutes behind.

Island Lark got the gun!

The last weekend of 3 back to back, another tough one with the wind staying fairly strong throughout the season! A few heartbreaks this weekend.... Especially to the ladies of Jay Dee, under Mariana Lescher's command who tried so very hard to have a great sail and came back for round two!!

Here's to the ladies...

Governors Cup Weekend Ahoy!

[audio:http://www.blogcanoe.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/europe-the-final-count-down.mp3] The final weekend, in this series of three race weekends back to back, is finally here! Hopefully it will be another great weekend like the last few, only this time we will be back on the Miles river. Hopefully we should have a large turnout of competitors! It will be nice to see Billie P. Hall and Oliver's Gift joining the fleet and maybe more!

Also, this is a special weekend because the entire Jay Dee crew will be all ladies! An entire female crew will race her for both races on Saturday. Jay Dee does not race on Sunday, due to her ineligibility to race the Governors Cup Race due to her "cut off" stern unlike all the other canoes who have a pointed bow and stern.

So everyone come out and support our Canoers, and our ladies!

RHYC Series Results!

1st Race (Saturday, July 19th)

The first race was set "A,R,S" roughly around 5nm, with the race starting on time at 10:10am. There was plenty of wind around 10-15knots at least. Only 6 of the 14 canoes registered raced this weekend.

Another great weekend with plenty of air, with a nice short course to start off with! There was plenty of time for lunch, almost too much time as the beer and food set in and soon naps became rampant among crews...

2nd Race (Saturday, July 19th)

After a Looooooong lunch break the carnage continued for another race! The race started at 2:40pm with the course set the same "A,R,S" but "X2" two times around, roughly a 10nm course with steady 15+ knots of wind.

Just as the first race, everyone knew the course only this time twice as long (possibly to wake everyone up from the long lunchtime nap) and plenty of wind to keep everyone on the edge of their boards. Mystery capsized scoring a DNF (an omen of what was to come the next day...) as well as Patrcia capsized before the race and was unable to start scoring a DNS. Silver Heel was dangerously close to going over but managed to stay hot on Jay Dee's stern. Island blossom sailed hard and fast right to the finish, giving a good 2 minutes from Jay Dee, the second to cross the line.

3rd Race (Sunday, July 20th)

The race was set again "A,R,S x2" although slightly longer roughly 10-11nm. The race started at 10:10am and with plenty of wind, was about 1hr 30mins+ long.

The last race of the weekend ended up being a rough one, plenty of wind and 2x around the "ARS" wore us all out. Patricia had some issues with their jib and ran her aground to fix the problem and was the last boat to cross the line. Jay Dee finished close behind Island Blossom only seconds between them (a great weekend for both canoes) Island Bird sailing only under a jib and a foresail (with a blind jib driver) manage to avoid the perils of strong wind and finish a solid "upright" weekend!

Mystery had a massive setback, the foremast gave way and broke in half nearing the finish of the race, obviously unable to finish... Hopefully they will be back this season, but that's a lot to ask for these boats!

I'm always thrilled to see as many canoes racing together as possible, and with the Spirit of Wyetown back racing, I was very excited for this season. Despite all the competition and rivalries I can honestly say it really is painful to have any canoe seriously damaged during or even towing to races. But as I've come to learn if you want to make an omelet you have break a few eggs! I can appreciate everything that goes into racing these "technological marvels" and I appreciate the entire crew coming out and racing along side us all!

A tribute to them...

?? ??? ? ?????? ?!

Another great weekend on the chester river, plenty of strong steady wind made for two days of great racing! Unfortunately there were only about 6 canoes that competed this weekend, but those that were able to compete raced hard and fast! Although it was a bit of a rough tow back to St. Michaels..

[audio:http://www.blogcanoe.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/gilligantheme.mp3] A long weekend...
